Basic Improvisational Keyboard Techniques

One-day intensive, (no distance learning option)
This course is designed for pianists and organists who have had traditional instruction and can read music, but would like to learn to play “by ear.” Students will learn the following:
- Chord names, voicings, and inversions;
- Playing from a lead sheet;
- How to integrate and support the melody;
- Arpeggiation techniques;
- Essential rhythmic concepts;
- How to play in a band.
This one-day-long intensive will include classroom instruction and demonstration, as well as some dedicated time for students to explore what they’ve learned individually. There will be opportunity for students to connect with the instructor online in the weeks following the class.
*Note: Students will not be taught how to play improvised solos.

Martial Besombes is the Director of Worship & Music at Park Avenue United Methodist Church in Minneapolis, a vibrant, multi-racial congregation in south Minneapolis. He is one of those gifted musical chameleons who can move effortlessly from hymns to jazz to country to hip-hop to Gospel without missing a beat. A native of France, Martial received classical piano and orchestration training at the Paris Conservatoire. He brings a deep love of the music of the church, and genuine passion for teaching church musicians.
