One of the principal tasks of musicians who plan and lead worship is to lift up the voice of the congregation. But how do we invite people to join in rather than sit back and listen? Can you change the musical culture in a congregation from one that is passive to one where people actively engage in singing? What are the ways that singing together builds community? Chad_organ5_croppedThis class will address these and other questions, and explore the Biblical and historical foundations of singing together when we gather.

Quotes from Fall 2015 Class:

“This was one of the finest seminars I’ve been to in my 40 years of being a church musician. I left feeling inspired and refreshed, and appreciated having a lot of useful ideas and information that we could put to use in our congregation. Well done!”

Playing Hymns with a Worship Band

Teacher – Jay Beech
Half-day intensive

Pop_singer_150There has been so much dynamic new worship music written with the “praise band” in mind. However, do you ever wonder if your band-led services should include some music that wasn’t written in the last ten minutes? What about the legacy of all the great hymns of the faith? Is there a way to include that music in your contemporary services without having it feel like an academic exercise?

Instructor Jay Beech answers this question with a resounding “YES”! Jay has taken his love of hymnody, plugged it into his internal groove generator, and created very cool arrangements for the worship band.

Students will receive a spiral-bound book with scores for dozens of hymns. The class will sing together accompanied by a great band led by Jay. He will provide commentary about each hymn and give some specific suggestions about how to play them effectively. Supplemental scores for horn sections and other instruments are also available for some of the hyDrummer2mn arrangements.

The $50 enrollment fee includes one spiral-bound music book, but you can
bring as many people from your church as you wish. Additional books are available for $10 each and can be purchased here. Note: Each person wishing to use the class as credit towards our Certificate in Worship & Music Leadership must enroll individually.
